«Niki de Saint Phalle» at Kunsthaus Zürich

Current Exhibition at Kunsthaus Zürich | 2nd of September 2022 – 8th of January 2023

Retrospective of about Niki de Saint Phalle’s extraordinary body of work, which includes early assemblages, action art and graphic works, the Nanas, the Tarot Garden, and massive, late sculptures, is highlighted in the exhibition’s 100 Works.

Leading female artist of the 20th century Niki de Saint Phalle (1930-2002) achieved international popularity with her „Nanas,“ which perfectly capture the seemingly carefree joy that the artist is known for. She is much more than that, though:

She had a strong interest in social and political concerns and actively questioned cultural norms and institutions, giving her work a timeless and up-to-date significance. Niki de Saint Phalle made a significant contribution to the performance art that is so current now with her renowned „Shooting Paintings,“ which were created in provocative actions as early as the 1960s. Retracing her creative career against this backdrop sheds new light on many of her works, particularly the „Nanas“ and the enormous installations in the public realm. This exhibition’s selection of pieces provides a window into the intricate and incredibly fascinating career of this remarkable artist. It also, of course, serves as Christoph Becker’s final exhibition’s colorful and diversified visual feast.

Her work is surprisingly diverse, ranging from eccentric to emotional to dark and brutal to humorous to enigmatic and frequently difficult. Its impressively broad spectrum goes from painting and drawing to assemblages, actions and large-format sculptures, and even theatre, film and architecture.
